- Story Text: Brazil's semi-final team to meet the Netherlands will include a player who a year ago was supplementing his income by selling melons and repairing vehicles.
Ze Carlos trained with his colleagues in Ozoir la Ferriere on Sunday (July 5) after being called in as a replacement for suspended full back Cafu.
He was a surprise inclusion in the squad after impressing in a friendly against Germany.
Ze Carlos had never been out of Brazil before that friendly and was so sure he would not be in the squad that he arranged to get married in June. The wedding was postponed.
This time last year, he was playing in the decisive stages of another competition -- the second division of the Paulista championship, a regional tournament in Brazil.
Although these clubs are in theory professional, wages are so low that many players supplement their income with other work.Ze Carlos alternated working on a stall in a market where he sold water melons and another job as a car mechanic.
But Brazil coach Mario Zagallo said he has full confidence in his untried player.
"It's his first time in the national team, but he's 30 years old and he wouldn't be here if he wasn't good enough." Brazil meet the Dutch in Marseille on Tuesday.
When the Brazilians faced the Netherlands in a World Cup quarter-final four years ago, they were forced to draft in Branco at left back for the suspended Leonardo.
There were worries that he could be outpaced by the Dutch attack, but he scored the winner in a 3-2 victory.
