- Story Text: Just over 29 hours after the start of the New York Marathon, the race's last participant crossed the finish line in New York on Monday (November 13).
Zoe Koplowitz, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, set a new world's record for the slowest marathon time.
This year's marathon winners, Tegla Loroupe of Kenya and German Silva of Mexico helped Zoe across the finish line of her eighth marathon where she was embraced by eight time New York Marathon winner, Greta Waitz of Norway.
At a news conference after the end of Koplowitz's brave effort, Silva called his victory more difficult than last year. He thanked his fellow Mexicans who cheered him on during the race.
It was the most competitive men's New York Marathon ever, while Loroupe won with room to spare as the pair became the first to both defend their New York crowns since Orlando Pizzolato of Italy and Waitz in 1985.
Loroupe said she was a little bit tired but thankful to have won again.
Silva clocked two hours and eeleven minutes, beating Britain's Paul Evans by just five seconds.
William Koech was third in 2:11:19 with fellow-Kenyan Simon Lopuyet and John Kagwe in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Loroupe surged away from world champion Manuela Machado of Portugal in the 18th mile and was never again challenged, winning in 2:28:06.
Machado held on for second in 2:30:37, with Lieve Slegers of Belgium third in 2:32.08.
