- Story Text: In what was interpreted as a goodwill gesture by the Russian government, Chinese President Jiang Zemin was allowed to visit Russia's largest space control centre in the town of Kalingrad near Moscow on Sunday (September 4).
It was considered a sign of honour that Russian authorities allowed the foreign president to visit to the top-secret space centre.
Jiang visited the centre's museum and chatted with cosmonauts on a space station via satellite.
China, which has its own space program, appears interested in cooperating with its neighbour now that the decades-old confrontations between the two countries seem to be in the past.
The visit to the space centre marked Jiang's third day of a five-day visit to Russia. He was granted the rare privilege of staying in the Kremlin, traditionally the residence of Russian rulers.
He has also been invited to visit Russian president Boris Yeltsin's birthplace on Monday (September 5).
On Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen told a news conference in Moscow that the the two countries have pledged to build more stable ties.
