- Story Text: Europe's Airbus consortium announced a big new order on Tuesday (September 6), but the outlook for civilian aircraft manufacturers remained gloomy despite glimmers of hope at the industry's showcase Farnborough air show.
Over 600 exhibitors and over 134 aircraft are expected at the show, which is opened to the public on Saturday and Sunday (September 10 and 11) after five days which began on Monday (September 5) solely for industry visitors.
But despite the scream of latest-technology low-flying fighter aircraft in the quiet English countryside and a huge display of military hardware, traditional new order announcements were minimal due partly to government cutbacks in defence budgets in the wake of the cold war.
Instead of orders, attention at the biennial show centred on the battle between United States (U.S.) and European manufacturers over who will supply Britain's airforce with replacements for its ageing Hercules transport planes at a cost of billions of U.S.
dollars.
On Tuesday, the airshow included displays by the McDonnell Douglas Longbow Apache, the U.S. Textron Bell Cobra and the Franco-German Eurocopter Tiger helicopters. The three aircraft are competing along with the new South African Rooivalk (Red Falcon) attack helicopter, for the British two billion pound (3 billion U.S. dollars) attack helicopter contract.
