It was very worrying for me and very emotional because you don't know what to expect and it's very frightening to see your child sitting on the tip of a rocket and feel that noise that absolutely attacks your chest. - Story Text: The world's second space tourist, South African Mark
Shuttleworth and his fellow Russian and Italian cosmonauts
have received a hearty welcome at Star City outside Moscow
after their touchdown on the Kazakh steppe earlier on Sunday.
The 8-day space odyssey has ended for Mark
Shuttleworth, the South African space tourist, who arrived at
Chkalovsky military aerodrome on Sunday (May 5) together with
his fellow team-mates Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gydzenko and
Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori.
After touching down at a remote location in the Kazakh
steppe, the crew was flown to a military aerodrome outside
Moscow where they were warmly greeted by relatives and
officials.
Yuri Gydzenko was the first to get out of the plane,
followed by Italian Roberto Vittori and Mark Shuttleworth.
Mark's mother Ronelle embraced her son and shed tears.
Ronelle Shuttleworth said she was very worried throughout
the whole mission but believed in the team and what her son
was trained for.
"It was very worrying for me and very emotional because you
don't know what to expect and it's very frightening to see
your child sitting on the tip of a rocket and feel that
noise. But I'm very happy that he landed safely and was very
confident with the skills of the team" she said
Shuttleworth was the second man, after American businessman
Dennis Tito, to have paid the Russian Space Agency an
estimated $20 million for such a trip.
Shuttleworth's serious approach to training and the long
hours of scientific research aboard the space station earned
him the respect of his fellow professionals and admiration at
home where he was toasted as the world's first "Afronaut."
From Chkalovsky aerodrome the crew was taken to nearby
Star City where the cosmonauts received a traditional bread
and salt welcoming ceremony. The crew gave no interviews and
went straight inside for further medical check-ups.
