- Story Text: The best windsurfers in the world have gathered on a 40
kilometre stretch of Venezuelan coastline to compete in the
Margarita Wild Winds 2001 Regata.
American Kevin Pritchard surfed to victory on Sunday
(June 10) winning the first place trophy after a challenging
fight against Jimmy D'Saz of the Virgin Islands.
"I think for slalom there's a little less pressure,
actually, because there's just... it's all close racing , but
in the end, I had a good lead going in to the final day.
"I think the competition here was really good. The local
sailors have improved a lot and it's good to come back and see
the people who live here always out there sailing and learning
more and pushing the level of my windsurfing... being able to
travel around the world," said Prichard at the news
conference after the race.
One of four tournaments in the Carribbean Windsurf
Circuit, the Wild Winds Regata included 48 competitors from
Argentina, Brazil, United States, France, Virgin Islands,
Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Margarita Island is located just off the northern coast
of Venezuela, and is considered one of South America's most
attractive vacation spots.
