- Story Text: The U.S. military has started to send humanitarian aid
to Iraq from Ramstein Airbase in southwestern Germany.
The first planeload of humanitarian aid rations
destined for Iraq left Ramstein on Tuesday (April 15), but
never reached its destination as bad weather over Harir
airfield near Bashur in northern Iraq forced the crew to
return to Germany without delivering the aid.
Several tonnes of rations were loaded onto the C-17
transport plane for the five hour journey, only to be turned
around shortly before the destination. However, an official at
Ramstein air base said the aid flights will be going regularly
in the foreseeable future.
Technical Sergeant Doug Simpson, responsible for the cargo
on board, said that every mission has its risks, especially
flying into a war zone at night.
"Every mission that we fly has risks, going into short
fields at night, that sort of thing, but we train for that and
I feel good about it, I feel like we have had adequate
training for the mission that we are doing," he said.
The pilot, Jeremy Hanson, said he was proud to be able to
help out.
"By hauling this food we are playing a small part in
helping them rebuild their country and get back on their
feet," he added.
