- Story Text: Iraqi Health Ministry starts to evacuate wounded
civilians from Falluja.
The Iraqi Health Ministry started to evacuate
wounded civilians from Falluja for treatment in the capital
Baghdad on Saturday (November 20).
A convoy of ambulances headed to the Jordanian Hospital
in the city to evacuate the wounded.
Iraq's health minister has said the evacuation had
begun of wounded civilians trapped inside Falluja during
the past four days of military operations.
In a statement, Minister Alaa Alwan said ambulances had
begun transferring "significant numbers" of wounded to
Baghdad hospitals. He did not specify how many.
On Friday (November 19), aid agencies, including the
Red Cross, warned of a major humanitarian disaster unless
Iraqi and US authorities allowed food, water and medicine
to reach the trapped civilians in the besieged city.
Many of Falluja's 200,000 to 300,000 residents fled the
city before the assault, which began last Monday (November
15). US officials had estimated that 1,200 to 3,000
insurgents were barricaded in the city.
