- Story Text: Residents of Antigua (Ann-tee-gwah) have made
preparations as the nearby Fuego (Fwey-go) volcano erupted,
sending streams of lava down the mountainside.
One of Guatemala's largest volcanoes began erupting on
Wednesday (January 08), sending nearby residents fleeing for
their safety.
"There are six or seven communities that, depending on the
direction of the wind, could be affected," said Sergio
Cabanas, a member of Guatemala's National Committee for the
Reduction of Disasters (CONRED).
The Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) in Antigua spurted
ash and lava on Wednesday and Thursday as the community's
inhabitants looked on, concerned.
Many chose to evacuate the area on foot.
"It is God's will, but we are not going to let the volcano
come down on us. We have to leave this place," said resident
Carlos Iscamic.
Fuego is one of three massive volcanoes that surround the
colonial city of Antigua.
It last erupted in May, 1999, prompting officials to make
precautionary evacuations.
Fuego had previously erupted in 1978.
