- Story Text: Buyers from across the globe found out that its what
they've got on underneath that counts at this years
International Lingerie Fair in Paris.
Models bared almost all, apart from the faintest wisps
of chiffon and lace, at the International Lingerie Salon 2002
in Paris on Friday (January 25). Despite the economic
downturn, buyers from around the world turned out in their
droves - including Jean-Jacques Rouzier, a
commercial agent for the Middle East where political
conditions have meant a downturn in business.
"We're taking a more prudent approach... If I take the
case of the Middle East right now, it is true that with recent
events, the market has fallen a little bit," Rouzier said.
Trends on the catwalk included plenty of sultry, rich reds
and blacks in slinky fabrics for after dark . Feathers and
pearls featured heavily as accessories. Even 60s inspired
monochrome made a comeback with plasticated polkadots that
catch the light, sported with coordinating over-the-knee PVC
boots and long black evening gloves.
One of Britain's fastest growing lingerie firms is MJM
International, famed for the Ultimo cleavage enhancing bra.
Head designer Helen Graham has spent the last nine months
expanding the collection to appeal to women of all ages and
lifestyles. "It's all about making yourself feel good," she
said.
More and more couture designers are moving into the
lingerie market. After four years of success with his own
label, Dior's John Galliano launched a lingerie line,
expanding on a theme already seen in his ready-to wear
collections.
"If you like it is completely in line with the
ready-to-wear ethos which was very orientated towards lingerie
- with lots of lace detail, thin spaghetti straps... he was
always keen to take his creativity further," said Serge
Liprandi, chief executive officer at John Galliano.
Agents were busy negotiating with buyers for Galliano's
underwear collection which will be available in retail outlets
from May.
The global lingerie market is worth more than 10 billion
euros with the French spending the most on day wear and
corsetry (1.97 billion euros) and the British spending most
(over 900 million euros) on lingerie for after dark. The best
selling item, despite a surge in G-string sales, is the bra.
317 million were sold in the E.U. in 1999/2000, and 335
million in the United States.
Lingerie 2002 international salon is a four day trade fair
featuring non-stop fashion events. More than 450 brands are
exhibiting their collections for Autumn/Winter 2002. The
latest innovations in lingerie fibre technology, packaging and
mannequins for display are also on show.
