- Story Text: Romanians react to the death of a civilian security
worker in Iraq.
One Romanian civilian security worker was killed
and another one injured on Sunday (April 11) in an ambush
near Baghdad, Romania's Foreign Ministry said on Monday
(April 12).
The injured worker underwent surgery in a hospital in
the Iraqi capital and is now out of danger, the ministry
said in a statement.
"Several cars full of employees of a security company
came under fire Sunday afternoon," Romanian ambassador to
Iraq Mihai Stuparu told a private Romanian television
station. Romania's Defence Ministry said in a statement no
Romanian soldier was involved in the incident.
The workers were employees of a private security
company working in Iraq. Dumitru Niculai, the managing
director of the company, BIDEPA, on Tuesday (April 13)
expressed regret over the death of a colleague.
"We are marked by what happened, we are sorry for the
loss of life," he said.
"Regarding the withdrawal of our people, we are under
contract and today we will discuss with them and with the
Romanian Embassy what we will do," added Niculai.
Romanians on the streets of Bucharest reacted to the
death of the Romanian security worker.
"Nobody was forced, they went voluntarily for a better
salary, so there are always risks when you want more money
you have to accept the higher risk," said one man.
"I do not agree to send troops there (Iraq) they are our children,
why should they fight there? If somebody attacks us ok, we are
defending our frontiers, but why should we go to make order over
there? I also would not like somebody else to come here,"
said another.
A woman nearby said, "Because we are involved (in NATO)
we have to take part. I think personally it would be better
to be less involved."
New NATO member Romania has contributed around 700
troops to the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
Around 400 Romanian soldiers are in the southern Iraqi
city of Nassiriya under Italian command, another 100
military police are under British command in the
south-eastern sector and around 200 are under Polish
command in the central sector, a Romanian army spokesman
said.
