- Story Text: Crowds of Christians mark Good Friday by taking the
Via Dolorosa route in Jerusalem that Jesus Christ is said
to have taken before his cruxifiction.
Hundreds of Christians participated in the Good
Friday (March 25, 2005) procession in Jerusalem's Old City to
commemorate Jesus' final days.
Worshippers carried crosses and followed the
procession down the Via Dolorosa tracing Jesus' last steps
to mark the most sombre period of the Christian calendar.
The Way of the Cross, also called Stations of the
Cross, Via Crucis, and Via Dolorosa, is one the most
popular Catholic devotions. The origin may be traced to the
Holy Land, where the Via Dolorosa at Jerusalem was
reverently marked out since the earliest times of
Christianity.
The Friday before Easter Sunday (March 27) is the day
the Christians observe as the day of Christ's crucifixion.
Many worshippers make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and
the Church of Nativity, where it is believed Jesus was
born, in the West Bank city of Bethlehem to mark Jesus'
death and his Resurrection which is celebrated on Easter
Sunday.
