- Story Text: First German tourists arrive home after Sharm
El-Sheikh bombings.
The first German tourists who were on holidays in
the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh have returned home on
Saturday night (July 23).
Some 90 holiday-makers landed at Munich airport at
2120 (1920 GMT) aboard a plane chartered by German tour
operator "Aeroflight."
About 25 people left the plane in Munich while the
remaining passengers continued the flight to Frankfurt.
Earlier on Saturday, bombs ripped through shopping and
hotel areas in Sharm el-Sheikh, killing at least 88 people
and wounding 200 in Egypt's worst attack since 1981.
One blast tore the front off the Ghazala Gardens Hotel
in Naama Bay, the site of most of the resort's luxury
hotels.
A car broke into the hotel compound and exploded in
front of the building.
According to a spokesman for Germany's federation of
travel agents (DRV), no Germans were killed in the
incidents but two German youths suffered cuts and were
flown home on Saturday.
It was not immediately clear where the youths were
taken for treament.
"I am so glad to be back, but sad at the same time
because it really is a great country," Verena Foerster told
waiting reporters upon her arrival in Munich.
"Unfortunately, we were only able to spend one day of
holidays there. But the one day was great," Foerster said.
Peter Hasslach, who was on the same flight, said "we
are just happy that we survived."
His small son Sebastian spoke of the sky "turning red
and then there was a loud bang" as he saw events unfold
from his hotel, some 15 minutes away.
Meanwhile, the German emabssy in Cairo has sent a
crisis team to Sharm el-Sheikh to take care of the needs of
its nationals.
