- Story Text: MotoGP mega star Valentino Rossi has given a press
conference in Paris.
Four-time World 500cc World Champion Valentino Rossi
goes into the weekend's French Grand Prix at Le Mans
confident he can keep ahead of his major rivals.
Although both Spaniard Sete Gibernau and
French Olivier Jacque both may have good reasons to hope to
slow down Valentino at Le Mans, the Italian has no
intention of letting either of them steal any of the
limelight. The world champion has powered his Yamaha to
victory in two of the opening three rounds, living up to
his reputation in the dangerous sport.
" Olivier was a great surprise for all, I
think, because after almost one year that he did not race a
bike, he arrived in Shanghai and made it straight into the
podium. Probably his exclusion from the MotoGP was unfair,
because a pilot who has always been good necessarily has a
good potential", Rossi said.
His greatest rival so far has been his
compatriot Marco Melandri, Gibernau's team-mate in the
Honda Movistar stable. Former world 250cc champion Melandri
has scored two podioum finishes and is second in the
championship, 25 points behind Rossi. The only rider to
have beaten Rossi this season is Brazil's Alex Barros, from
the Camel Honda team, who won in Portugal.
Rossi added : "I am very happy to work for
Yamaha because it is a great team and has a wonderful
atmosphere. Now I only think of next year, I hope the
contract will be signed soon; then we will see."
Rossi, who joined Yamaha from Honda at the
start of the 2004 season, quickly stunned the world by
becoming the first rider in the history of the sport to win
back-to-back premier class races for different manufacturers.
On his constant motivation to keep winning he
said : "I think when one thinks one has become a perfect
pilot, that is when the problems start. The best motivation
is to constantly try to improve, to become better and
faster. Those are the things for which I race. I hope I can still
improve."
