- Story Text: Heavyweights Klitschko and Sanders ready for a war.
It was low key and strictly business at Wednesday's
(April 21, 2004)news conference for this weekend's heavyweight
championship fight between top contenders Ukrainian Vitali
Klitschko and South African Corrie Sanders.
It will most likely though be different Saturday (April 24) when
the two will meet at the Staples Center in Los
Angeles for the WBC Championship. Sanders, the No. 2 rated
contender, has already knocked out Klitschko's brother
Wladimir and picked up a new nickname at the press
conference.
"Hello everybody, this was the first time I heard the
word sniper so its a nice word for me. Everything has been
said to everybody and all I can say is that I'm ready and
Saturday night must come and I want to get in the ring and
get out and go home and be the champion and I'm looking
forward to fighting Vitali," said Sanders.
The 6' 8" Klitschko is the top rated contender and is
coming off an impressive performance against Kirk Johnson,
who he knocked out in the second round. He also vowed to
revenge his brother loss to Sanders. The giant Ukrainian
fighter said he'd also liked to get another shot against
retired WBC champion Lennox Lewis who attended the press
conference.
"Lennox Lewis promised me a revenge match and he didn't
keep his promise. Today, he is a promoter of Sanders and
he will not fight himself. I'm fighting Corrie Sanders and
I will do my best to win and then hopefully Lewis will
comeback," said Klitschko.
Lewis, whose final fight before retiring was a 6th
round stoppage of Vitali said that he's retired for good.
"Yeah definitely there is a chance we can get together
and drink a glass of champagne. I don't know where he
parties. But no I've retired mate, been there done that,
end of story."
Saturday's fight is expected to provide plenty of
action with both fighters being heavy hitters.
