Pope John Paul is breathing unassisted after
successful throat surgery, but he has been advised by his
doctors not to peak for several days, the Vatican said on
Friday (February 25).
The Vatican's first medical bulletin, issued some 16
hours after the Pope had a tracheotomy to open his windpipe
and help him breathe, looked to allay fears about the
increasingly fragile health of the Roman Catholic leader.
Spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters the
84-year-old Pope's heart and blood circulation were good
and that he had not developed any infections such as
pneumonia.
Cardinal Bernard Law was the latest visitor to Rome's
Gemelli hospital. He had no comment on the pontiff's
condition.
Earlier, Cardinal Lopez Trujillo who also visited the Pope said
the
pontiff seemed well.
"I found everything (around the Pope) very serene and
tranquil," Trujillo said. Asked whether he thinks the Pope
will recover, Trujillo said: "Yes, I do believe so."
The Pope was rushed to the hospital for the second time
this month on Thursday with a repeat of the severe
breathing problems that had forced his original
hospitalisation.
Navarro-Valls said the decision to operate had not been
an emergency procedure. During the 30-minute operation,
surgeons placed a tube into the Popes throat to allow air
to flow
directly to his lungs.
Medical experts warned that the man known as the
Church's great communicator might not be able to speak for
some time, and even then he may need a special device to
help him form sounds.
