- Story Text: The San Fermin festival has officially opened in
Pamplona with thousands of tourists from around the world
eagerly anticipating the annual 'running of the bulls'.
The festival began on Sunday (July 6) but the first
bulls will not be released into the old area of the Spanish
city until Monday. That's when hundreds of people will try to
race in front of the bulls along the 825 metre (2,707 ft)
course to the bullring.
Runners are often injured by bulls and 13 have been killed
since 1900.
The run takes the bulls from corrals to the bullring,
where later in the day they are fought. The festival was made
famous by Ernest Hemingway in his 1920s novel 'The Sun also
Rises'.
Visitor Jim Dorrande said he was scared about running with
the bulls, but that's what he was there for.
"You come to chase the bulls and watch them chase you
too," he said.
His friend Andrew Walker said: "Yeah we're scared, very
scared, but we're going to do it anyway."
Another visitor, Olaf Jornkeren, was taking what he
thought was a more sensible approach.
"I am going to run with somebody that has experience. I am
not that crazy guy that is drunk, is going to run a lot of
race -- no, that's not (me). But I'm really looking forward to
it; I'm really looking forward to it," he said.
Another tourist said he was too scared to run, but he
could thoroughly recommend the place.
"I would recommend Spain 'big time'. It's a great party
atmosphere; it's fantastic. So yeah, I love it, it's very
nice," he said.
