- Story Text: Doctors at Baghdad's al-Kindy hospital have been
working around the clock to try and cope with mounting
casualties, many of them civilians.
An ambulance speeds towards Baghdad's al-Kindy hospital
on Saturday (April 5, 2003), bringing the latest casualties to teams
of exhausted doctors and nurses.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said several
hundred wounded Iraqis have been admitted to Baghdad
hospitals. The number of casualties has significantly
increased since U.S. troops reached the city and fighting
erupted in the streets.
Doctors at al-Kindy hospital alone say they received
dozens of wounded and dead on Saturday.
Patients said their their houses in the al-Dura
neighbourhood in Baghdad were shelled last night and in the
morning during heavy fighting between Iraqi soldiers and U.S
troops.
Journalists were showed half a dozen civilian casualties,
many of them children. But in other wards, it was impossible
to say whether the wounded were civilians or soldiers.
Hospitals are finding it increasingly difficult to cope
with the flow of casualties.
According to Iraqi authorities, U.S.-led attacks have
killed 1,252 civilians and injured 5,103 in Iraq. The number
of military casualties is unknown but is expected to be very
high.
