- Story Text: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is emerging as
clear favourite to take over from Boris Yeltsin as President
at next year's elections.
At a news conference on Monday (December 20), the day
after Russia's parliamentary elections, the First Deputy
Director of the Yeltsin administration, Igor Shabdurasulov,
confirmed Putin's standing.
The unexpectedly strong showing of the pro-Kremlin Unity
party means that pro-Kremlin poltiticians, like Putin, will be
on the ascent next year.
Shabdurasulov also believes the next parliament, the Duma,
will be more constructive than the last one and more in line
with the politics of the President.
