- Story Text: Musicians from 24 different countries are getting
ready for the Eurovision song contest finals in Kiev
Thousands of fans from all over the world have come
to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev to catch a glimpse of the
50th edition of the Eurovision song contest that will see
its finals on May 21, 2005.
Big tv screens have been set up at the city's central
Independence square where tens of thousands of people are
expected to watch the show on Saturday night.
The Eurovision song contest, one of the world's biggest
TV shows, is hosted by Kiev this year after pop star
Ruslana Lyzhychko stormed to victory during last years'
contest in Istanbul.
Walking arm in arm with Ukrainian boxing champion
Volodymyr Klitschko, Ruslana welcomed the participants at
the Sports Palace, the venue for the TV spectacle.
Some of the contenders were singing part of their songs
for the press as they lined up for security checks outside
the building. After performances by hopefuls from 25
countries, envelopes were opened last night to reveal the
10 successful semi-finalists, including Israel, Denmark and
Latvia. They will now join the 14 countries who were
already guaranteed a place in the final.
One of the favourites of this year's contest is the girl
band "Feminnem" from Bosnia & Herzegovina with their song
"Call me". The three girls, Ivana Maric, Neda Parmac and
Pamela Ramljak founded their group in 2004 after their
success in the Croatian Idol Competition.
The first to perform on Saturday is Hungarian lady
singer Peter Szabo Szilvia with her band NOX. Mixing tunes
and lyrics of Hungarian folk music with electronic music of
the third millennium, her song "Spin the world" made it
successfully through last nights' semi finals.
The finals will start at 1900 gmt on May 21 and will be broadcast
live by all participating countries.
