- Story Text: Workers at a recently closed textile factory in the
French town of Givet are continuing their threat to blow up
the plant if ongoing negotiations on severance packages do not
satisfy their demands.
Staff at the Cellatex textile factory in the eastern
town of Givet where unemployment reaches 22% threatened
earlier this week to blow it up before dumping thousands of
litres of sulphuric acid into a stream, turning the water
blood red.
Emergency workers threw down sand barriers to stop the
toxic acid flowing into the Meuse river, which also runs
through the Benelux countries.
Cellatex unions and government representatives have
scheduled another meeting in an attempt to end the
dispute. Unions are demanding that the 153 staff be paid
150,000 francs (21,000 US dollars) redundancy compensation
each and full wages for at least for two years after the
factory closes down.
