- Story Text: The 4th Infantry Division remember 9/11 in Iraq
In Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit in northern
Iraq, the American 4th Infantry division gathered on the
steps of one of the former dictator's palaces to remember
the victims of 9/11.
Soldiers stood listening to the ceremony's opening
remarks from Sergeant Major Jim Caraway who spoke of his
memories of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath.
"I will always remember my very emotional feelings of
patriotism and love of my country, I saw Americans come
together and that was a good thing." he said.
Readings from the bible were read and then the 4th
Infantry Division's Commanding General, Major General
Raymond T Oierno spoke of why, two years after the tragedy
so many Americans found themselves commemorating the
anniversary in Iraq.
"We must remember why we are here today, why we are
standing on the steps of a palace in Saddam Hussein's home
town of Tikrit, why are we here. We're here to liberate a
country from a brutal dictator who does not allow his
people to have those freedoms, we're here to build a bright
and better future for Iraq, one where its children can
grow, one where they can be free, one where they can choose
their own path, one where they can choose what they want to
do in the future." he said.
Prayers were read and a moment of silence called in
memory of those who died two years ago. The ceremony ended
with the Division's song followed by the U.S army song
played as the soldiers left the ceremony to return to their
duties.
