- Story Text: The U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Daniel Coates has
expressed his pride in the commitment of American soldiers who
have been injured in Iraq.
The U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Daniel Coates, visited
the United States (U.S.) military hospital in the German town
of Landstuhl on Monday (March 31) and spoke to some of the
soldiers injured in Iraq, who are being treated there.
There are currently 72 patients from "Operation Iraqi
Freedom" being treated at the hospital. Twenty four of them
were wounded in combat, five are in intensive care.
Landstuhl, is America's largest military hospital outside
the United States.
The nearby Ramstein Air Base is the primary transportation
hub of the U.S. military and provides global reach for
patients needing care.
For more than 20 years the U.S. Army's Landstuhl Regional
Medical Center has treated wounded soldiers from various
conflicts including Sarajevo, Somalia and Afghanistan as well
as the first Gulf War.
The 20-building hospital complex has all the technology of
a major urban medical center and an array of specialists
unrivaled by any American hospital in Europe.
Ambassador Coates said the soldiers had told him they were
proud to be serving their country and that they were thinking
of the friends they left behind on the battlefield.
"They told us that they were proud to be serving their
country and that they were thinking of their friends and their
buddies in their units and that their thoughts were as to how
they were doing. Several of them expressed their hopes that
they would recover quickly so that they could rejoin their
units," Coates said.
After visiting the military hospital Coats said that while
the United States appreciated the co-operation it have
received from Germany for U.S. military bases and facilities
throughout Germany, the U.S had also been disappointed that
the United States and Germany have not achieved the strength
of unity that the U.S had hoped for.
"Well, we have been disappointed that we have not achieved
the strength of unity that we had hoped for from our German
allies, particularly the pressure which we thought was needed
to show a united sense of purpose against Saddam Hussein and
his tyrannical regime. We also however do appreciate the
co-operation we have received from our German hosts. Support
for this hospital, for our bases and facilities throughout
Germany," he said.
Coates also spoke briefly about plans for a post-conflict
Iraq and said the U.S hoped for a united effort in rebuilding
Iraq.
"It is our hope that we can forge a united effort in
providing post-conflict support for Iraq, humanitarian relief
and reconstruction, peace-keeping and restoring legitimate
government," Coates said.
