- Story Text: Minute's silence held at schools across Russia in
memory of the Beslan siege victims.
Schools opened across Russia on Thursday (September
1, 2005) with a minute's silence held in memory of the victims of
the siege of a school in the town of Beslan one year ago.
September 1 marks the start of the new academic year in
Russia, the date has been pushed back in Beslan.
At Moscow's school no. 228, students observed a minute's
silence for the Beslan victims before the start of classes
on Thursday (September 1).
Earlier at a traditional ceremony, a first year student
had rung a bell to herald the start of the new academic
year. Parents at school no. 228 looked on and a policeman
kept watch as pupils presented their teachers with gifts of
flowers.
Exactly a year ago, more than 1,000 parents and children
had arrived at school No. 1, many carrying flowers for
their teachers, a tradition on the first day of term.
But they were greeted by heavily armed gunmen who held
them for three days, killing many of the male hostages and
withholding drinking water, forcing some children to drink
urine.
In a bloody climax on Sept. 3, an explosion in the
sports hall prompted security forces to storm the school.
331 people, more than half of them children, died in the

In Moscow on Thursday, a group of medical students laid
floral tributes and placed soft toys outside the North
Ossetian republic offices in memory of those who died in
Beslan.
Some Beslan relatives say many victims died because
officials botched the rescue operation. They say they will
take their grievances to Russian President Vladimir Putin
when they meet him in the Kremlin on Friday.
