- Story Text: Schools closed in town of Lviv in Ukraine to allow students and teachers to take part in pro-Yushchenko rally.
Schoolchildren in Lviv, in the nationalist heartland of western Ukraine, were given an unexpected day off on Tuesday (November 23) to allow teachers and students to rally in support of opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko.
Schools closed their doors and students gathered in the town centre.
"We were gathered at school this morning and asked if we may go to centre of town. We went first to University and stayed around there with the students and when we came to the centre town we saw people from all schools of Lviv there" said one girl, Zoryana.
Another student, Liliya, declared they were protesting because their "school is for truth and we do not want to have bandits in power."
Undeterred by the threat of a crackdown, many speakers at Independence Square, in the capital Kiev, urged students to seize control of universities that have been largely abandoned for several days.
And up to 200,000 protesters rallied outside an emergency session of Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday (November 23) demanding authorities admit they cheated in a presidential poll which showed the country's Moscow-backed Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich had won.
Parliamentary deputies held the session in response to calls from supporters of West-leaning challenger Yushchenko, who says he was robbed of victory in Sunday's (November 21) second-round run-off by backers of Yanukovich.
U.S. and Western observers say the run-off presidential vote fell far short of international standards. Washington warned of punitive measures if the Kiev leadership failed to investigate allegations of vote rigging.
With passions high against the background of a warning on Monday (November 22) from security forces that they would crush unrest "quickly and firmly", the political split could turn violent. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
