- Story Text: One of the world's top stores, Harrods of London, in England, began its annual January sale on Saturday (8 January) - a bargain-basement event for the wealthy, where 'cheap' can mean thousands of pounds.
SYNOPSIS: The store has become famous for its policy of supplying anything a customer wants, and hundreds of people queued overnight to get first choice of the hundreds of bargains on offer. Mink coats at half their normal price - six to seven thousand pounds (10-12,000 dollars US) - were among the attractions.
Harrods normally has a staff of 5,000 assistants, but they took on an extra 1,000 for the two-weak sale, and another 1,000 for the first day.
Last year the store took more than GBP2 3/4 million (4.7 million dollars US) on the first day, and this year it expected sales to top three million.
The 15 percent reduction in all wine prices also attracted large numbers of the 100,000 first day customers, eager to stock up on top quality wines at a mere GBP30 or so per bottle (50 dollars).
In the piano department, the wealthy with a taste for music could purchase a Bechstein grand piano for a thousand pounds off its normal price of nearly 9,000 (15,000 dollars)
Among other musical bargains was a harpsichord, selling for one-third less than its normal price of nearly 4,000 pounds. (6,500 dollars)
There were large price reductions in Harrods' stocks of fur coats, with some selling for only half their regular price. One chinchilla mink was reduced from 7,200 pounds (12,000 dollars) to 3,600 (6,000 dollars).
