- Story Text: More than 400 waiters and waitresses competed in Paris's 13th annual Waiters' Race on Sunday (September 23), covering an 8-kilometre (5-mile) route beginning and ending at the capital's Hotel de Ville (City Hall).
The rules of the contest, which began in 1977, oblige competitors - all wearing their full waiter or waitress uniforms - to run with an ordinary serving tray, carrying a water-filled bottle and two glasses with one hand.
A contest spokesman said that any entrant who broke a bottle or a glass, as well as anyone holding the tray with two hands, would be disqualified.
There were several broken bottles and glasses along the route past some of Paris's most famous streets and buildings, but no one was reported cut by broken glass. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
