- Story Text: Despite both teams having already qualified for the knockout stage Bayer Leverkusen will make every effort in Wednesday's (December 7) Champions League match against AS Monaco to beat their guests, coach Roger Schmidt said.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of the game, Schmidt told reporters that this was his fourth game against Monaco since he became Leverkusen's coach and he was looking to put the record straight after some tough defeats.
"Three times we lost very unfortunately, one was a very unfortunate tie. So we will of course try to turn things around tomorrow and then beat them at home. This is obviously an incentive to make it through this group phase unbeaten."
AS Monaco's Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim made clear this was not about making any gifts.
Asked to reveal his line-up since "tomorrow's game is almost a friendly," Jardim said "no, I don't think at all that this is a friendly."
"We are playing in the Champions League and the fact that tomorrow's game might look like a friendly is the reward for both teams which have already clearly qualified during the first five games. So this is a Champions League game," Jardim said.
