- Story Text: Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi formally handed over power to the newly appointed premier Paolo Gentiloni on Monday evening (December 12) in a hastily organised ceremony at the prime minister's office.
Only an hour earlier Gentiloni and his cabinet ministers had been sworn into office by the Italian President Sergio Mattarella, with most of the outgoing ministers kept in place in a sign of continuity aimed at reassuring financial markets.
Quickly moving across town, Gentiloni joined Renzi at the seat of the Italian government in Palazzo Chigi to be presented with a bell that Gentiloni later rang for the start of his first cabinet meeting.
On Tuesday (December 13) there will be a vote of confidence on Gentiloni's government in the Chamber of Deputies, with another confidence vote in the Senate on Wednesday (December 14).
The Italian President has been trying to make sure Italy has a solid government ahead of an EU meeting in Brussels on Thursday (December 15). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
