- Story Text:Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Monday (November 21) his government looked forward to intensifying dialogue with regards to economic relations between Japan and Mercosur, during his state visit to Buenos Aires, where he met with his Argentine counterpart, Mauricio Macri.
"In the first semester of 2017, Argentina will hold the presidency of Mercosur. We are willing to intensify the dialogue about the economic relationship between Japan and Mercosur. We have also exchanged observations on a number of challenges facing the international community. In particular, we share the recognition of the importance of peace and stability in world society and we agree that it is important to ensure freedom of navigation in the oceans and airspace as well as the importance of peacefully resolving conflicts," said Abe after holding a bilateral meeting with Macri at the Casa Rosada government palace in Buenos Aires.
On the other hand, Macri, thanked Abe for his visit and spoke about integration.
"Beyond the fears that we are facing today and that travel the world, the solution is not to close, the solution is to integrate. This is what the Argentines bet on and that is why we have raised to the world a new type of link with clear rules of game where we hope that those who come and bet by our capacity are really respected and are happy with the decision they are making. Thank you Prime Minister for the visit and I really hope this is a very important beginning for both countries," Macri said.
Abe came to the country with a prominent delegation of Japanese businessmen led by Eiichi Hasegawa, special adviser to Abe and CEOs and senior executives of Mitsubishi, Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui, The Bank of Tokyo, NEC, Nippon Signal, Toyota Argentina and Honda Motor Argentina.
Before meeting with Macri, both countries signed cooperation agreements between the Argentine Agency of Investments and International Commerce and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) as well as the Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN).
After this meeting, Abe was received by Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra to perform the traditional floral offering to the Liberator in San Martin Square.
According to data provided by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Argentina exported a total of 1,223 million dollars to Japan last year, and bought goods to the Asian country worth 572 million. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
