- Story Text: Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes on Monday (November 9) toured areas affected by heavy flooding and mudslides that have killed 124 people in the central American country.
Rivers burst their banks and hillsides collapsed under rains triggered by Hurricane Ida's passage, cutting off parts of the mountainous interior from the rest of the nation.
The central San Vicente province where the town of Verapaz is located was one of the hardest-hit areas. Streets were covered with mud, rocks and stones.
"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. These people have been hit hard by a phenomenon of nature," said Funes.
Relatives, overwhelmed by grief, have now started burying their loved ones.
Ida weakened to a tropical storm on Monday as it churned toward oil and gas facilities in the Gulf of Mexico and was forecast to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast early on Tuesday between Louisiana and Florida. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
