- Date: 9th November 2016
- Summary: (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "Ladies and Gentlemen. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) Several hours ago the presidential election ended in the United States of America. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) We were following this campaign attentively. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) I would like to congratulate the American people with the end of the election period (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) and Donald Trump with his victory in this election. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) We heard his pre-election statements while he was still a candidate for the U.S. presidential post, (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) which were aimed toward restoring relations between Russia and the United States. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) We understand it won't be an easy path taking into account, unfortunately, the level of degradation in relations between Russia and the U.S. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) As I have already said many times, it is not our fault that Russia-U.S. relations are in the state that they are now. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) But Russia is ready and wants to restore full-fledged relations with the U.S. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) I repeat that, we understand this won't be an easy path, but we are ready to play our part in it (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) and do everything to return Russia-U.S. relations to a stable course of development. (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION). This would be good for both the Russian and American people (PAUSES FOR TRANSLATION) and would have a positive impact on the climate of world affairs, taking into account the special responsibility of Russia and the U.S. in keeping global stability and security." Russia is ready to do its part to fully restore ties with Washington following the election of businessman Donald Trump as the next U.S. President, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday (November 9).
Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favoured rival Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's presidential election, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
Among those uncertainties will be the Trump administration's future relations with Russia. Ties between Washington and Moscow have become increasingly strained over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and allegations of Russian cyber-attacks featured in the U.S. election campaign.
"We heard his pre-election statements while he was still a candidate for the U.S. presidential post, which were aimed toward restoring relations between Russia and the United States," Putin said on Wednesday at a ceremony to receive credentials from new foreign ambassadors.
"We understand this won't be an easy path, but we are ready to play our part in it and do everything to return Russia-U.S. relations to a stable course of development," he added.
"This would be good for both the Russian and American people and have a positive impact on the climate of world affairs."
Trump is widely viewed as friendly to the Kremlin and Putin has said previously his future counterpart is a talented and colourful character.
The Kremlin said earlier on Wednesday Russia hoped coordination with the United States over the war in Syria, where the two countries back opposing sides, would improve under the new U.S. president. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
