- Story Text: Leader of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia and ultra-nationalist ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, invited Parliament members and journalists into his office in State Duma on Wednesday (November 9) to celebrate Republican Donald Trump's U.S. election victory with champagne.
"To Donald Trump's victory! To new internal and foreign U.S.policy! And to soon improvement of relations between Russia and the United States. This is a historic moment because it hasn't happened during the last 71 years," Zhirinovsky said emptying a glass of champagne with his party comrades at his Duma office.
Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favoured rival Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's presidential election, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
Among those uncertainties will be the Trump administration's future relations with Russia. Ties between Washington and Moscow have become increasingly strained over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and allegations of Russian cyber attacks featured in the U.S. election campaign. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
