- Story Text: Small, clay statues defecating known as "caganers" or "poopers" of U.S. presidential candidates Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican rival Donald Trump have gone on sale in Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia to mark the election on Tuesday (November 8).
Although the original "caganer" is a figurine of a peasant in a red beret and a white shirt, the figurines, which originate in Catalonia and are now mostly based on celebrities and political figures which are traditionally hidden in nativity scenes for friends and family to find.
Believed to bring prosperity and luck for the coming year, "caganers" have attracted international buyers with the U.S. accounting for over 40 percent of sales, according to retailer caganer.com.
"At the beginning we used to sell Donald Trump more but Hillary has been catching up and right now there is a technical dead heat between the two. Like everyone, we don't know who's going to win," said owner Marc Alos.
With the result of the U.S. election soon to be revealed, residents of Spain have made up their minds about the candidates.
"If I would have to choose, I would vote for Hillary Clinton because I don't have any respect for this person, for the way he talks and behaves, I would never vote for him, I would choose Hillary, even though she must have learned something from her husband," said 63 year-old bank employee Juan Mascarreras.
"I don't support of any of them, I think these elections are very important because the United States is the most important world power and the result of this election is vital," Sonia Vizcaino, 42, said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
