- Story Text: Plumes of smoke rose from the rooftops of Bashiqa on Tuesday (November 8) as Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces moved among destroyed buildings and rubble into the Islamic-State held town.
Crackles of gunfire were heard as large clouds of smoke rose from buildings in the centre of the town, northeast of Mosul.
Peshmerga forces stormed Bashiqa on Monday (November 7), clearing a pocket of militants outside the city while Iraqi troops wage a fierce urban war with the jihadists in its eastern neighbourhoods.
The town of Bashiqa is a key strategic point on the approach to Mosul, the largest Islamic State-controlled city in either Iraq or Syria that has been held by the group since June 2014.
The Mosul campaign, the most complex military operation in Iraq in a decade, brings together a force of around 100,000 soldiers, security forces, Shi'ite militias and peshmerga, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, to crush the Sunni jihadists. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
