- Story Text: Various social movements marched in Peru on Friday (November 4) against the expansion of free market policies, as part of a regional day of demonstrations for democracy and against neo-liberalism.
Hundreds turned out against the free trade deal. Although the protest was largely peaceful, some skirmishes erupted on the streets of downtown Lima.
Protesters demanded that the Peruvian parliament not ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), which they say threatens national interests and submits the country's economy to will of multinational corporations.
"There is one demand, that Congress not approve the TPP, that it be discussed but not approved," said protester, Daniel Mathews.
The TPP is a free trade agreement between countries located around on the Pacific Ocean, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, the United States, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Vietnam and Peru.
But protesters say such a massive deal will result in Peruvian businesses going bust.
"The TPP puts the country in jeopardy, we're being sold the idea of development, economic investment. But the truth is the TPP is against all of this. In terms of development, it will not allow Peruvian companies to grow because foreign companies will raze them," said protester, Maritza Baos.
Peru was subscribed to the agreement by former president Ollanta Humala, but depends on ratification by Congress, which in its majority supports the pact. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
