- Story Text: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf arrived in Madrid on Tuesday (April 24) for a four-day visit to meet members of the Spanish government and representatives of the Muslim community.
Musharraf, a key U.S. ally, was welcomed by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, a critic of the U.S.-led military operation in Iraq.
Islamist attacks and illegal immigration were among the items on the agenda. Spain has stepped up security in its North African enclaves and southern coastal towns since suicide bombings in Algeria and Morocco two weeks ago.
After a brief meeting, the two leaders attended the signing ceremony of international cooperation agreements by their foreign ministers.
Musharraf, on a four-nation tour, arrived from Poland and was expected to meet King Juan Carlos later on Tuesday. On Wednesday (April 25) he will meet members of the Spanish Parliament as well as Madrid's Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon.
Musharraf will travel to the southern city of Cordoba on Thursday (April 26) for meetings with Spain's Muslim community.
He is due to continue his tour with visits to Bosnia and Turkey where he is expected to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
