- Story Text:X Japan has rocked its fans since its inception in 1982, fusing together a power/speed metal sound that made it one the most successful acts in Japanese music history. And one that is now the focus of the documentary film, "We Are X."
"It was like a very sad story, almost too sad to be true," said Yoshiki, the founder and drummer for the band and the subject of the documentary. "It was very hard for me to even say yes to create this film. But now it's kind of over, you know the creating. It was very therapeutic process."
Directed by Stephen Kijak, "We are X" details the behind the scenes and backstage look at the band that defied professional setbacks and personal loses in creating a legacy that has gone on too have a strong influence on rock music around the world.
"All these things happen," Yoshiki told Reuters, in explaining how he turned to music after the tragic death of his father during his childhood. "I really appreciate you know our fans for supporting us for a long time. Without my fans I'm not even here. I don't even exists. So I don't take anything for granted. I want to seize every single moment from now on."
The film also focuses on the band's music and Yoshiki's drumming style that provided the beat behind X Japan's punch.
"So knowing that this band, that Yoshiki has influenced people like Metallica and Guns and Roses and some of the best drummers in the world know who Yoshiki is," said Backstreet Boys band member A. J. McLean. "When you think of Larz, you think Larz knows Yoshiki, really, that is how much of an impact he has had on this business. It's amazing."
McLean, was also among the celebrities attending the red carpet event that voiced concern and support for reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who was the victim of an armed robbery while in Paris.
"I mean you know it's sad," said McLean. "I'm glad she is OK. I'm sure she is till shook up. That would have freaked me the hell out and I can tell you that right now and I'm not a big guy but that's really scary stuff."
