- Story Text:Mexico's Colima volcano erupted on Friday (September 30), spewing a large plume of ash and thick black smoke into the sky and provoking the evacuation of two nearby villages.
The volcano is located in western Mexico between the states of Colima and Jalisco and is one of the country's most active.
Luis Felipe Puente, head of national emergency services, told Reuters that some 350 villagers living in the shadow of the volcano in the towns of La Yerbabuena and La Becerrera have been evacuated to a nearby shelter.
The director general of Mexico's civil direction, Ricardo de la Cruz, on Saturday (October 1) said the government was still encouraging people to get out of the area.
"We are doing everything we can to incentivise people, and to urge them in a respectful manner, it's a sensitive subject. We don't know how far this can go or whether volcanic activity will recede. However, we always have to prepare ourselves for such a situation, and especially now at night because it's hard to evacuate," de la Cruz.
The 3,800 meter volcano has increased in activity this week and the director of the Colima University Observatory, Gabriel Reyes, said the recent activity is associated with more significant activity.
"We took note of a change in activity. It was passive activity. We began to see another kind of activity, which we usually associate with an explosion of material. This was recently observed with the incandescence after the material was destroyed in the volcanic dome. And the last 24 hours have been, can I say, dramatic, because the explosion of materials," Reyes said.
According to website volcanodiscovery.com, increased activity at the volcano is due to the growth of a new lava dome.
The Colima Volcano, also known as the Fire Volcano, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
