- Story Text: Residents in Gaza burnt pictures of U.S. President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu and Shimon Peres, who was laid to rest in Jerusalem on Friday (September 30).
Pictures of Peres, Netanyahu and Obama were set ablaze after noon prayers in Gaza city just hours after Peres, the former Israeli leader who won international acclaim for peacemaking with the Palestinians was buried in a funeral ceremony at Jerusalem's Mount Herzl cemetery.
People who participated in the demonstration sprayed Israel's flag on the street with the Arabic sentence, "Death to Israel".
Resident of Gaza, Abu Moumen said, that they are against the participation of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas in the funeral of Peres.
"We are against the participation of Palestine's delegation in the funeral of Peres because Peres is a killer of Gaza's children and he did made a lot of wars and massacres against our children and our people in Gaza Strip," Abu Moumen said.
Dozens of world leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and French President Francois Hollande, joined family members and hundreds of dignitaries to pay their final respects to the Israeli statesman and Nobel laureate.
Peres, who died on Wednesday (September 28) two weeks after a stroke, jointly won a Nobel Prize for his peace efforts with the Palestinians in the 1990s, landmark talks that have failed to achieve a final land-for-peace agreement.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shook hands and exchanged brief words at the funeral.
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations have been frozen since 2014 and Netanyahu and Abbas, deeply divided over Jewish settlement on land Palestinians seek for a state and other issues, have not held face-to-face talks since 2010. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
