- Story Text: The hottest stars in television hit the red carpet ahead of the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards this weekend. The celebrity-studded event unfolded in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday (September 18) afternoon.
British actress Kate Winslet waved to fans as she made her way into the show in a fitted red gown. Winslet later won the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or movie for her lead role in the HBO series "Mildred Pierce." The show, which also features Melissa Leo, Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood, led in total Emmy nominations with 21.
Steve Carell made time to talk to reporters about his fond memories of playing a frustrated paper supply company manager on "The Office."
"It's just sweet. It's just sweet. It's all great, you know? I had a great run on the show. I've made a lot of incredibly good friends. I owe that show everything. So this is fantastic."
After earning six Emmy nominations for the role, Carell lost the lead actor in a comedy series prize to Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory."
Sofia Vergara took a turn on the crimson rug in honor of her nomination for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for "Modern Family."
"Glee" star and Emmy hostess Jane Lynch only had time to speak to a handful of media outlets before being rushed inside ahead of the ceremony.
Edie Falco earned an outstanding lead actress in a comedy series Emmy for her role in "Nurse Jackie."
Steve Buscemi and Paz De La Huerta walked the red carpet for "Boardwalk Empire," a period drama about a Prohibition-era politician The show snagged 7 Emmys, including one for Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese. De La Huerta told reporters she thinks a key reason fans love the show is because they appreciate the adherence to authenticity.
Julianne Margulies made time to talk to the media before going on to win outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her role in "The Good Wife."
Melissa McCarthy took home best lead actress in a comedy series for her part in "Mike & Molly."
Peter Dinklage walked away with the outstanding lead actor in a drama series trophy for his part in the medieval fantasy "Game of Thrones," which also stars Jason Momoa. Dinklage talked about his approach to awards shows.
"Have lowered expectations and good things might happen to you," smiled the 42-year-old actor. "Or they're good by comparison if you have low expectations. But, yeah. I mean I know how good the show is. But you don't know if other people will recognize that so it's nice."
"Game of Thrones" earned a total of 13 Emmy nominations. It was filmed primarily in Ireland and Scotland.
"Mad Men" cast members made a strong showing on the red carpet. John Slattery and Christina Hendricks were among those to talk to the media and greet fans. Their show went on to win its fourth consecutive outstanding drama series Emmy, although none of the individual actors took home any awards this year.
London-born actor Idris Elba talked about the global popularity of his British crime drama "Luther."
"I mean, look. We work really hard on 'Luther,' and we weren't expecting to get nominated. People said America won't see it get nominated. So it's a blessing. But our show's really successful around the world. It's done really well in England and it's done really well outside. So, we're excited about that."
Elba got an Emmy nod for playing the lead role, but lost to Barry Pepper for his part in "The Kennedys."
Paula Abdul made an appearance at the Emmys in support of her former show, "American Idol." She tried to describe how she and Simon Cowell interact with one another. Sparks have flown between the two for years as they sat side by side and judged contestants on the uber popular program aimed at discovering new talent.
"You know what? Our relationship is something that's not tangible. You can't articulate it. Kind of like 'The X Factor.' We're like an old married couple without the sex, by choice."
Abdul and Cowell will reprise their roles as judges together on Cowell's new show, "The X Factor," set to debut later this month.
Jon Cryer, Julie Bowen, Maria Bello, Jimmy Fallon, Elisabeth Moss, Matt LeBlanc, Nigel Lythgoe, Kathy Griffin, Kathy Bates, Tracy Morgan and Rob Lowe were also spotted talking to the media and waving to fans on the red carpet before the big show. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
