- Story Text: Kurdish Peshmerga forces were in control of the village of Abu Jarboa, northeast of Mosul, on Tuesday (October 25), while a family who fled the village spoke of abuse from the militant group.
The village lies on the road between Mosul and the town of Bashiqa which is 16 kilometres (10 miles) northeast of Mosul.
One man from the village, Farhan Kathem, said punishments were harsh under IS rule.
"They would force (women) to cover their faces and men to wear a beard. If you do not have a beard you will be punished with lashes," he said.
His family fled the village holding up a white flag before being picked up by Peshmerga and Kurdish forces, he added.
They fled fearing air strikes and an Islamic State retaliation.
"When the planes hit the village, families were hurt because Daesh use civilians as human shields," he said.
A Peshmerga commander in nearby Bashiqa, Brigadier Sayed Hazar, said he had received many families from Abu Jarboa but he was unsure how many more people remained in the village.
On the ninth day of the offensive on Mosul, government forces and allied Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are still fighting their way towards the city's outer limits, in the early stages of an assault which could become the biggest military operation in Iraq in over a decade.
The Mosul campaign, which aims to crush the Iraqi half of Islamic State's declared caliphate in Iraq and Syria, may become the biggest battle yet in the 13 years of turmoil unleashed by the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
