- Story Text: China promised Bolivia a $4.8 billion (US) investment on Thursday (October 6) for various infrastructure projects from steel and highways to hydroelectric development.
Bolivian President Evo Morales celebrated China's assistance in the South American country, after the former also cancelled a debt of $800,000.
"The presence of China in Bolivia particularly allows us to free ourselves from any conditioning and blackmail by some powers who want to impose economic policies," said Morales, welcoming the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, to the government palace in La Paz.
The Chinese investment is destined towards the development of at least nine highways, the Mutun steelworks project, a new airport in Santa Cruz and the Rositas hydroelectric plant.
Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linea announced an intended Chinese investment of approximately $7.5 billion (US) during a visit to the Asian country in October 2015.
In a reciprocal visit on Thursday, Wang highlighted the geopolitical importance of the Bolivian relationship for China.
"China has always been in favour of the belief that all countries are equal members of the international community and the affairs of each country should be defined by their people without suffering interference from other countries," said Wang.
"Bolivia, like all other countries of the world, has the right to promote the development of its own country. The Bolivian people, like all people of the world, have the right to lead a happy life. China also is a developing country. China does not have the sufficient capacity to respond and cover all the necessities that Bolivia needs for its development but you have security, development and the cooperation of China with Bolivia is always sincere," Wang added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
