- Story Text: The American Cinematheque in Los Angeles honored the work of legendary screenwriter and director Paul Schrader on Friday (September 30) with a screening of his latest film, "Dog Eat Dog", starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Defoe.
Cage said working with Schrader, who wrote the movies "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull," had a different working method to other directors.
"He comes from a school of if it isn't broken don't fix it, so many directors tend to micromanage performers and shut them down, Paul doesn't do that. He gives you confidence and he frees you so that you feel that you can do almost anything and you know I feel like I'm in safe hands with Paul Schrader," said Cage.
Schrader said "Dog Eat Dog" was unlike anything he had directed before.
"It's also nice to be able to keep working and this is a film that it's unlike anything that I've ever done before. You know I have been involved in a number of prestigious and important films in my life, this is not one of them," joked Schrader.
"This one is really just, just kind of outrageously nasty, you know and I had a really good time doing that," he added.
"Dog Eat Dog" is a comedic crime thriller that marks the second collaboration between Schrader and Cage.
"Taxi Driver," which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, was screened after "Dog Eat Dog" on Friday.
Schrader said he got "lucky" with the "Taxi Driver."
"Yeah a film that won't die, it has 40 years on. You know, what can you say? I mean, sometimes you get lucky," he said.
