- Story Text:Food is the focus of an event in Jordan aimed at showcasing healthy cooking techniques and the latest dietary trends.
The event is organised by Nutricenter, a nutrition clinic in the kingdom.
At a time when more food allergies and intolerances are being diagnosed, alternative food products are flooding the market.
Some participants are here to showcase these alternatives and offer them as samples to the guests.
One event participant, Ghaida Hamoudeh, wanted to introduce people to her alternative bread product, a barley and oatmeal based bread.
"This event is extremely important, it allows us to directly communicate with people and enables us to clarify the details of our product and the different ways it might be used. We also reaffirm (through these events) the importance of healthy eating and maintaining ones health,'' she said.
The annual event entitled 'Simply Women' is aimed at women in the kingdom, and their role in preparing healthy meals in their homes.
"Healthy food has to be balanced, providing the body with all the (nutrients) it needs, whether this is proteins, vitamins or minerals, everything regularly. All important factors needed by the body should be taken along with exercise of course. All these together will help you create a healthy lifestyle,'' said one attendee, Ola Rifai.
Food stalls showcased different types of food including protein bars and shakes, and alternative ways of cooking traditional Arab dishes were also on display.
Amal Haddad is one of the event organisers and said that, as women, they have a crucial role of fostering a healthy eating environment.
"These events help women and mothers in choosing the best path forward. As you know today there is a lot of misinformation out there, on television, through different people, where some speak out for something and others speak out against it. Here we are trying to give women the complete picture,'' she said.
According to a report in 'albawaba' weight loss surgeries are on the rise in the kingdom, with people seeking out medical procedures to tackle their weight.
The International Diabetes Federation also found that less than one in five adults in Jordan are at a healthy weight.
The one-day event was held on Tuesday (September 27) and was inaugurated by Princess Alia Al Tabaa. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
