- Story Text: Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland on Thursday (May 31) was awarded Germany's Walther Rathenau prize for "his services in order to deepen European integration during the Polish presidency of the European Union" last year.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel pointed out his achievements as the president of the European Union.
"Over the last couple of years his credit as a long-sighted European were clearly visible," Merkel said in her eulogy for Tusk.
Thanking his hosts, Tusk highlighted in his address "a clear message in this award - to continue to work on the German-Polish relations."
"We can not afford to ever rest during all this work (building Europe) and it is about us and future generations to maintain and cultivate our relations so that history can never be repeated, neither on German ground nor on Polish, and not in our common Europe. Thank you very much for all those kind words, for the medal, and for your feelings," Tusk said.
The Walther Rathenau award is the second award given to Tusk by the Germans.
In 2010, Tusk received the Charles the Great Award, one of the most popular political awards in Germany.
The award has been awarded since 2008.
Walther Rathenau was the minister of foreign affairs of the Weimar Republic, an industrialist as well as an essayist of Jewish descent, who was murdered in 1922 by German extreme nationalists.
The first person who was given this award was the head of German diplomacy, Hans-Dietrich Genscher.
Other recipients include the President of Israel, Shimon Peres and U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
