- Story Text: At least nine people were killed and seven injured in a fire on Saturday (January 26) in a building under construction in Moscow's southwest.
Russian Emergencies Ministry Colonel Sergei Gedin said that the dead were builders who were working on the building as well as living in it.
"At 13:07 we received a message at dispatch about the fire in a building under construction. After the first car arrived, the dense black smoke started coming out of the basement. Then the chief officer made the decision to give the fire the highest rank. The fire engulfed 500 square metres."
Firefighters found two dead upon arrival, and rushed an additional 14 to hospital, Gedin said. Seven people died on the way to the hospital.
All of the injured were in the basement of the building, Gedin added.
"We found everyone from the -1 floor, and we evacuated everyone from there," he said.
It took firefighters just over two hours to extinguish the fire, which they said could be blamed on violation of fire safety rules, Russian news agencies reported.
