- Story Text: Small scuffles erupted in Germany's financial capital Frankfurt on Friday (May 18) as anti-capitalist "occupy movement" sympathisers attempted to break through police lines sealing off the banking district.
Some 500 protesters chanting "we are peaceful, what are you?" walked down one of the city's main thoroughfares, carrying banners with slogans such as "take the square."
The demonstrators are protesting against the role of banks in the current euro zone debt crisis and the way EU governments are handling the situation which they say negatively affects many people across Europe.
On Saturday, police are bracing for up to 40,000 demonstrators to descend on the city.
Up to 2,000 of them have a potential to turn violent, according to police who are planning to have some 5,000 officers from across Germany in place. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
