- Story Text: Gangsta Rapper Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson is not a star many would expect to see at the Cannes Film Festival, but the singer-turn-actor made an appearance on the Croisette on Monday (May 22) to introduce his second feature film.
Following the success of autobiographical 'Get Rich or Die Tryin', 50 Cent extends his acting resume in Irwin Winkler's 'Home of the Brave', a film about U.S. soldiers returning home from the Iraq war.
Cannes-goers were treated to a 45-minute preview of the film, which the director said only finished shooting two weeks ago. The film looks at the emotional problems of three U.S. soldiers who try to readjust to life at home after witnessing the horrors of war. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Ricci and Jessica Biel.
Winkler said he was initially concerned about the rapper's tough image, but was happy to very different man underneath the surface.
"When I met him he fit into the whole mood of what we were trying to do with the film, and I was very very pleased with him, because what I wanted was to create an atmosphere of all the soldiers being close to each other. And he fit right into that and as you see here he's a very warm snugly guy if you can believe that," he said.
For 50 Cent, who is said to have been shot nine times, the movie was an eye-opener. And he said he had a real-life reference to draw back on when preparing for the role.
"Oh yeah, I actually did go to Iraq to perform for the soldiers. That was an experience. As soon as I got off the plane they told me, 'We ain't going to bullshit you, you are going to die today'. You know what I mean, it's incredible. For me, from the moment he said that to me, I was like, wow, did I make a mistake by coming here to perform for them, you know. But what about the people who can't just get on a plane and get back home?" he said.
But his experiences in Iraq were soon pushed aside, as the rapper concentrated on enjoying his first ever Cannes Film Festival. After speaking to reporters on a pier, 50 Cent was seen entering a beach party and a few hours later attended the red carpet premiere of X-Men 3. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
