- Story Text: Russian navy returned to its base in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol on Wednesday (January 6) after conducting the largest naval exercise in recent years in the Mediterranean Sea near the coasts of Cyprus and Syria.
On its website the Russian Navy said the drill was the largest in the last ten years inter-fleet training exercise with the participation of Baltic, Northern, Black Sea and Pacific Fleets.
"(These exercises) have very big significance. Sailors from three fleets have drilled interaction within the group alignments, accomplished the range of joint combat training missions. This is very important for formation commanders, vessel commanders and for the crews," said Chief of Staff of Russian Black Sea fleet, rear admiral Alexander Nosatov.
Exercises started on January 19 in the Black and the Mediterranean Seas.
According to the Russian Navy the main objective of the exercises was to practice 'the formation of a combined group of forces outside the Russian Federation, plan its use and perform joint operations within a Navy group under a common plan'. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
